Wyoming GOP: off its rocker
The Republican Party in way-out Wyoming is the dominant political force in a sparsely populated state, but it is making national headlines with some patently wacky decisions.
For instance, the Wyoming GOP has approved a resolution to longer consider U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney — the state’s lone House member — a Republican. Why? Because Rep. Cheney has decided that Donald J. Trump violated his oath to protect the Constitution and has cast a vote to impeach him when he was president of the United States.
If there is a more laughable — but seriously not funny — action, the Wyoming GOP has set a standard that will be difficult to beat.
“It’s laughable to suggest Liz is anything but a committed conservative Republican. She is bound by her oath to the Constitution. Sadly, a portion of the Wyoming GOP leadership has abandoned that fundamental principle, and instead allowed themselves to be held hostage to the lies of a dangerous and irrational man,” Jeremy Adler, a Cheney spokesman, said in a statement to The Hill on Monday.
Indeed, Adler has it spot on. Cheney comes from solid Republican stock. Her father, Dick Cheney, served as Wyoming’s congressman before becoming White House chief of staff for President Ford. He served as defense secretary for President George H.W. Bush and as vice president for President George W. Bush. All three POTUSes are Republicans. So is Dick Cheney. So his Lynne Cheney, Liz Cheney’s mom.
Now, though, the state GOP wants to punish Liz Cheney because she stands for the rule of law? Because she abhors the actions of a crooked, venal individual who masquerades as a Republican?
I am shaking my head as I write this.
