Tell us you lacked support, Matt
Matthew Dowd is now a former candidate for Texas lieutenant, dropping out the other day while proclaiming some higher purpose, that he wanted to promote a more “diverse” field of candidates than the one that was shaping up with him in the race.
Hah! What a joke!
Dowd is a former adviser to Democratic Texas Gov. Ann Richards, Democratic Texas Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock and Republican President George W. Bush. He went from Democrat, to Republican and back to Democrat. He thought he would run for lieutenant governor, hoping to win the primary and challenge Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in the fall of 2022.
Why don’t politicians simply tell us the truth when they find themselves without adequate support to continue these exercises in political futility.
My strong sense is that Dowd, who lives in the Hill Country community of Wimberley, just couldn’t raise the money he would need to run in the primary. He lacked support. His campaign was going nowhere. I would be willing to bet real American money that the candidate’s waffling between the parties might have something to do with the lack of traction in his ill-fated effort.
Geez, man! Just tell us the truth! He could say something like: “I have discovered that Texas Democrats are looking for other options than those I was offering and so, therefore, I am unable to generate the support I need to keep my campaign afloat. Thus, I am ending my bid for lieutenant governor and will back whomever win the primary contest next spring.”
A little truth-telling would go a long way in this age of lying, evasion and obfuscation.
