It is a truly astounding thing to see when a former president of the U.S. — a twice-impeached POTUS at that! — suggest to a sitting governor that he should ask the Legislature to conduct a “forensic audit” of election returns to determine “widespread voter fraud,” and then governor does what the former POTUS has asked of him.
So it was when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott bowed to the demand of Donald J. Trump, who said the state should examine the returns of key counties, most of which voted (legally, I should add) for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
So, Abbott called for audits in Dallas, Tarrant, Harris and, oh yeah, Collin counties; these are four of the most populous counties in Texas. I mention Collin County for two reasons: One reason is that I live there with my wife along with one of my sons and his family; the other reason is that Collin County voted narrowly for Trump in 2020.
These forensic audits are going to take some time to complete. In reality, they are a waste of time, money and energy.
There was no widespread voter fraud in Texas. Nor was there any such fraud anywhere in the country. The former president hired a fellow, Christopher Krebs, to oversee the conduct of the 2020 election. He did his job! He declared the 2020 election to be the “most honest in U.S. history.” The former POTUS’s reaction? He fired Krebs!
And yet … the former Liar in Chief keeps insisting that there was fraud, that the election was stolen from him and that he intends to prove it. How the ex-POTUS proves it is the greatest mystery since, oh, Martians landed at Roswell.
He won’t prove squat on that matter … so let’s move on.
Greg Abbott might seek the presidency himself in 2024. He might run for the Republican nomination against the one-time Imbecile in Chief (although I stand by my earlier stated belief that the ex-POTUS ain’t gonna run).
I cannot understand how the governor can heed the ridiculous assertions of a desperate politician, knowing in his gut that the elections conducted in this state were done fairly, legally, competently and with high integrity. Yet he does do what his “master” insists.
This is beyond anything I can comprehend. Texas is going to spend money that could go for more important matters … such as, oh, let’s see: winterizing the power grid so we don’t freeze again!
